1 Knife For slicing tomatoes and pickles
1 Cutting board
1 Tongs Optional, for toasting the bread
Ground Beef
- 300 g Ground beef 80/20 recommended
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black pepper
- 1 tbsp Neutral oil or beef tallow For cooking
Sandwich
- 2 Italian sandwich rolls Split in half
- 4 slices Cheddar cheese
- 4 slices Gouda cheese
- 2 tbsp Ketchup
- 2 tbsp Yellow mustard
- 1 medium Tomato Sliced
- 6 slices Pickles
Heat a large frying pan over high heat and add the oil or beef tallow until shimmering.
Add the ground beef in one layer. Let it cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes until a deep golden-brown crust forms.
Flip the beef, season with the salt and black pepper, then continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes until fully cooked and nicely browned.
Split the Italian sandwich rolls in half and lightly toast them until the inside is golden and crisp.
Spread the ketchup and mustard evenly over the toasted bread.
Pile the hot ground beef onto the bottom half of each roll.
Place the cheddar and Gouda slices directly over the hot beef and let them melt for about 1 minute.
Top with the tomato slices and pickles for freshness and crunch.
Close the sandwiches and serve immediately while the bread is crisp and the cheese is perfectly melted.
Storage
Store leftover cooked ground beef in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For the best texture, store the bread separately.
Reheating
Reheat the beef in a skillet over medium heat for 2–3 minutes or in the microwave until hot. Toast the bread separately before assembling the sandwich.
Freezing
Freeze the cooked ground beef for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Variations
-
Swap the cheddar for provolone, mozzarella, or Swiss cheese.
-
Add caramelized onions for extra sweetness.
-
Add jalapeños for a spicy version.
-
Use whole wheat rolls for extra fiber.
Substitutions
Ground turkey or chicken can replace the beef. Gouda can be replaced with mozzarella if preferred.
Pro Tips
-
The beef already has great flavor with just salt and black pepper—don't over-season it.
-
Cook the beef in a very hot pan with hot oil or beef tallow.
-
Let the beef develop a deep brown crust before turning it.
-
Toast the bread before assembling to keep it crisp.
-
Add the cheese while the beef is still hot so it melts naturally.
